That’s a wrap! I have officially completed Week 1 of 80 Day Obsession and I have to say, I am feeling fantastic!! No, it’s certainly not easy. Yes, my willpower is being tested. BUT, I am overcoming obstacles that I never have in the past. So, I’ve decided to document my journey with you as I go through this program. I’m going to tell you about my successes, but also the struggles that I am experiencing and how I am overcoming them.
As a Beachbody Coach, I had the opportunity to join in on an exclusive Coach Test Group with 80 Day Obsession trainer, Autumn Calabrese. She is also the creator of popular programs like 21 Day Fix, 21 Day Fix Extreme, Country Heat, and Masters Hammer and Chisel. I was SO excited when I joined this group because it’s the first “real” test group I’ve been in as a Coach. As a result, I made the decision to really try as best as I possibly can to stick to the program. In addition, I have teamed up with some of my Coaches to run a customer test group, where we have 120 members! The motivation and participation is through the roof and I am loving the positive response to the program so far! Of course, as a leader of the group I want to be able to practice what I preach, which is another driving force of doing this program correctly.
So, let’s chat about Week 1 OBSTACLES!
Obstacle #1: Incorporating longer workouts. I will be the FIRST to admit, that the biggest turn off for me when I heard about 80 Day Obsession was the fact that the workouts average 45 minutes. Many of them push closer to the 60 minutes mark. After years of doing 22-30 minute workouts, how on EARTH was I going to have time for THIS?! Well, it took some rearranging, but I sucked it up and did it! I realized that I had to give up my early morning workouts because it made more sense for me to get them in at a different time of day when I knew I wouldn’t be interrupted or rushed. Of course I am still adjusting as my morning looks 100% different than it has for the past few years, but I am finding that I actually enjoy it and am more productive!
Obstacle #2: Timed Nutrition Eat BEFORE I work out? Eat every 2-3 hours? Eat foods from certain portion containers together? WHAT?! Fine tuning my schedule so that I can incorporate my meals at certain times of the day took some time, but it has been well worth it. Was it easy to plan out? Not exactly. But I did it! I am also finding that by pairing up certain foods, it’s actually keeping me fuller and giving me more energy.
There are quite a few nutrition plans with 80 Day Obsession. Using a very specific formula that is provided allows you to narrow down what plan you need to start the program in. The plans range from Plan A (lowest container/calorie bracket) to Plan F. I personally fall in to Plan A (roughly 1200-1499 calories), so the meal plans that I will be sharing will show the plan with the least amount of food. While I was a bit nervous with that at first, my body did adjust quite well. I found myself with those evening cravings out of habit, but I am really starting to re-train myself NOT to grab the ice cream, pretzels, or any other snack (healthy or not).
Below is my meal plan that I used last week for Week 1. The blue highlighted part is my workout block. A workout block consists of a pre-workout meal, my workout, and then a post workout meal all within about a 3 hour or so time frame. The key to building this meal plan is figuring out when exactly your workout is going to happen so that you can arrange your meals around that.
As you can see above, I do incorporate a few supplements into my day. I drink Energize, which is a pre-workout drink that tastes like lemonade. It gives me that extra boost of energy to push harder in my workouts, which is greatly needed since they are longer and more intense. I also drink chocolate Recover. Recover is a post-workout drink that is loaded with protein and helps to repair muscles and reduce muscle soreness. In my opinion, these two supplements are VITAL to 80 Day Obsession. I know how sore I used to get when starting new programs and NOT drinking Recover. I don’t feel half of that soreness now!
I also incorporate my daily Shakeology. This is a non-negotiable for me. I’ve been drinking Shakeology for over 4 1/2 years now and STILL look forward to it every single day. Who WOULDN’T look forward to something that is equivalent to a chocolate milkshake?! Plus, it’s one meal that I don’t have to plan out or even think about. I blend it up with 1/2 banana, water, and ice and viola! It’s great for those on-the-go times where you need something quick, too!
Below is a snapshot of one of my days last week. While I am only a week in, I am finding a solid routine of what is working well.
Yes, the workouts are longer in this program than most other Beachbody programs. Yes, I did complain A LOT about that. But truthfully, even after a week, I actually don’t mind at all! The workouts average 45 minutes with a few of them being 55-60 minutes. You have 6 workouts per week and then either a rest day or a short 18 minute roll and release using a foam roller. I did that one today and couldn’t believe how great it felt! It’s honestly a mindset thing in my opinion. As someone who has been using programs that range from 22-30 minutes, it was tough accepting the fact that changing up my routine in order to accommodate this program was necessary. Let’s face it, change can be uncomfortable! Overall though, I am really enjoying the workouts, especially with the new equipment that I am using. The workouts do require light, medium, and heavy weights; along with a set of resistance loops and a pair of sliders. Talk about C.O.R.E work! I have never done a program that is such a great total body workout, yet incorporates such a strong focus on the core and lower half.
Another aspect that I hold great value in doing each and every day is reading my personal development. Maybe it sounds strange that I am talking about reading PD while telling you about a home fitness program, but I can not scream it loud enough what an important role it can play. Whether you listen to an audio book in the car or read a book before going to bed, it DOES make an impact. Right now I am reading the book Finish, by Jon Acuff. If you are that person who tends to start and stop a lot of those goals you set, READ THIS BOOK! As a perfectionist myself, I am finding some valuable life-changing nuggets of info every day.
So there you have it!! Week 1 is officially DONE and I am ready to go for Week 2! I’ve got my new meal plan printed out and on the kitchen counter so that I have that constant reminder. I also have food prepped in the refrigerator that includes chopped veggies, washed lettuce, and cooked chicken.
As for my WEEK 1 RESULTS, here are a few facts that I can say….
- I am sleeping like a rock!
- I noticeably have more energy!
- I don’t crave the need for that afternoon coffee!
- While I do have to sometimes fight off the evening cravings, I am doing it and I am adjusting!
- Did I lose weight? Honestly, I learned quite some time ago that that number on the scale doesn’t define us. Everyone is SO different when it comes to weight loss. We were told that we were allowed to weigh ourselves at the beginning of the program and then after each of the 3 phases. I did sneak on the other day and saw that I was down 2 pounds so obviously, it’s working!
I posted and talked a lot about 80 Day Obsession in December and the beginning of January, and I found that over half of those who decided not join my test group didn’t give me a financial reason, they gave me a commitment excuse. “80 days is a long time” is something that I heard a lot. “I don’t have time to eat all day” is another one. I could go on and on but I’ll spare you. Listen, I get it! I get that this may be “HARD.” It’s something that will certainly challenge you and push you to new levels. But you know what? Stepping out of my comfort zone to really embrace this change has been incredible and I’m only one week in.
Change is uncomfortable at first, but once you adapt, SO much good can come out of it. It’s SO EASY to put ourselves last on the list. But you know what? You can’t be the BEST version of YOU, if you can’t take care of yourself.
